Welterbe-Ausstellung

Welterbe-Ausstellung

The permanent World Heritage exhibition opened on the occasion of the nation-wide World Heritage Day on 5th of June 2011. The exhibition is situated on the ground floor of Olthof‘s palace next to the Old Market Square. With funding of the “Federal Program for National UNESCO-World Heritage sites” the property was redeveloped to make it publicly accessible. Nowadays you will find here the office of the local World Heritage management and the World Heritage exhibition. In five cabinets visitors will be informed about the following topics:

UNESCO and the World Heritage idea

Cabinet 1 provides general information about the World Heritage idea. An oversized globe in the centre refers to the international dimension of the topic. Small LED spots mark selected World Heritage sites on the globe. Show cases in the four corners are filled with a variety of souvenirs from all over the world. A large screen shows pictures of international World Heritage sites. Two text boards provide basic information about UNESCO und its tasks as well as about the World Heritage convention.

World Heritage in Germany

All German World Heritage sites are being presented in cabinet 2. Fold-out boards with a sliding function on a rack show each World Heritage sites ordered by its year of inscription. Stralsund and Wismar as well as the youngest site are highlighted.

Stralsund and Wismar

In the same cabinet an animated movie illustrates the main reason for being a listed World Heritage site. The movie focuses on the preserved mediaeval ground plan and shows the city’s creation and its development using historic documents and sources from 1234 until 2002.

The media room in cabinet 3 offers a selection of movies about UNESCO and World Heritage issues as well as about Stralsund.

The World Heritage values of the city of Stralsund are explained in cabinet 4. A large media table in the centre provides information about archaeology. Illuminated show cases on the walls deal with the three parish churches, the monasteries, the residential houses and the town hall.

Living in a World Heritage

Cabinet 5 refers to the today’s quality of the World Heritage site as place to live, to work, to reside and to spend leisure time. A short presentation demonstrates the progress in restoration over the past 20 years.

A large sandpit in the courtyard contains the model of the historic centre made of fired clay. Younger visitor may playfully excavate the city with spades and brushes.
